Welcome to our glossary: part dictionary, part demystifier. This is where we break down industry terms, redefine outdated language, and explain what we actually mean when we say things like “genital wax” and “gender-affirming care.”

Brazilian Wax — a gendered term for a genital wax that does include a strip between the cheeks. Typically this service refers to a wax that removes all hair from the genital area. Looking for this service at Beehive? Book a Genital Wax, instead!

 

Gender Affirming — refers to anything that affirms one’s sense of self in their gender identity. Anything can be gender-affirming (clothing, haircuts, hair removal, piercings, tattoos, surgeries, etc.)

Gender Expression — the external, visible, and behavioral manifestation of a person’s gender, communicated to the world through clothing, hairstyles, voice, mannerisms, name, and/or pronouns

 

Gender Dysphoria — a deep sense of unease and distress that may occur when your biological sex does not match your gender identity

 

Gender Identity — an individual’s deep, internal, and personal sense of being a man, woman, both, neither, or anywhere along the gender spectrum. Gender identity is distinctly different from one’s gender expression or sexual orientation.

Genital Wax — a gender neutral term for a wax of the genital area. At Beehive, this term is synonymous with what many traditional waxing salons call a Brazilian wax. It includes as much (or as little) hair as you want off the front, and a strip between the cheeks. 

 

Genital Wax Full — a gender neutral term for a wax of the genital are that does NOT include a strip between the cheeks. At Beehive, this term is synonymous with what many traditional waxing salons call a Bikini wax. It includes as much (or as little) hair as you want off the front, and does NOT include a strip between the cheeks. 

 

Genital Wax Line — a gender neutral term for a wax of the genital area that the least amount of hair. At Beehive, this term is synonymous with what many traditional waxing salons call a Bikini Line. It includes a little off the top and a little off the sides, and does NOT include a strip between the cheeks. 

 

Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS) — a chronic, non-contagious skin disease causing painful lumps, boils, and abscesses, typically in sweat gland areas like the armpits or groin.

 

Hyperpigmentation — excessive pigmentation of the skin.

Ingrowns (Ingrown Hairs) — a hair that curls back or grows sideways into the skin rather than rising from it, resulting in inflammation, redness, and sometimes infection

 

Trauma Informed — a framework that recognizes the widespread impact of trauma, understands potential paths for recovery, and actively resists re-traumatization by integrating this knowledge into policies, procedures, and practices.
