The Ins & Outs: A guide to Proper cleansing of genitals
When it comes to talking about Properly cleansing our bodies, especially our genitals, it can be a weird and confusing conversation to have. But being that our mission is to provide inclusive waxing & skin services, breaking down the barriers of “uncomfortable” conversations is something we’re constantly practicing! While what is considered proper cleansing is often debated, what we know for certain is that it helps with managing things such as body odor, ingrown hair, UTIs and other health related issues. We also know that this practice looks different for every body and body part so there is no “one size fits all” for everyone. Here‘s a guide on cleansing based on all the things we’ve learned.
When deciding what products to either try or keep in our routines, it’s important to get familiar with the labels. Products with fewer and easily recognizable ingredients tend to be better options for areas like our genitals as they are less likely to be as hazardous. safer products used for cleansing tend to be: Fragrance Free, pH Balancing, Free of Harmful Ingredients
long with knowing what is safe, Being aware of the ingredients you should avoid when shopping for intimate washes is helpful too! Some ingredients have shown to cause harmful long-term effects or allergic reactions. Ingredients to avoid in washes & why: Triclosan - can disrupt endocrine system; used in anti-bacterial products, Diethanolamine - can cause skin irritation; listed as DEA, “fragrances” - can be undisclosed chemicals of unknown toxicity, parabens - can disrupt hormones; preservatives often ending in “-yl” like isopropyl, synthetic dyes (D&C Red 33, Ext. Violet 2, FD&C Yellow No. 5) - Can cause skin irritation/allergic reactions, not recommended for use mucous membranes such as the throat, nose, mouth, urethra, rectum, and vagina

Okay so now that we have an idea of what to look for when it comes to products What does it look like to properly cleanse? Well, it depends! Every body is different but here are some basics: make sure to gently wash between any skin/folds thoroughly with water, Soaps should never be used internally (water is just fine for all body cavities such as the vagina, anus, & urethra), Exfoliate skin 2-3 times weekly (can dry brush before a shower for more targeted dead skin removal), Douching is not recommended for vaginal cleansing and should be very limited if used for cleansing the anus.
How to Cleanse: using a color code guide, The next slides are a guide on where to cleanse with product and which areas are suggested to be cleansed with just water. Keep in mind that genitals are diverse just like us, so not only will they all look different but so will the cleansing process. Some people may need to maneuver their bodies in particular ways, pull back more skin or be extra careful not to get soap in more sensitive areas. While this is a limited look into different genitals - know that even if you don’t see a perfect representation of your own here, yours are completely normal (:
